Understanding Molding Shrinkage

Molding Shrinkage refers to the percentage reduction in the dimensions of a plastic part after it is removed from the mold and cooled to room temperature.

Because shrinkage is not only caused by the thermal expansion and contraction of the resin itself but is also related to various molding factors (such as pressure, temperature, and wall thickness), the shrinkage rate of a molded part is technically referred to as the Molding Shrinkage Rate.

Note for Engineers: Accurate shrinkage data is critical for mold design to ensure the final part meets dimensional tolerances.
